The Broadfield Pub Review

The Broadfield Pub in Sheffield is a place I have been many times in my life. My family often visits throughout the year and have also made it an annual tradition to go for their fantastic Christmas dinner on the 27th of December to see the season out. I wanted to review this place that has been the source of many a tasty meal and recommend it to others who live or want to visit Sheffield as I think it is truly one of the best possible examples of how delicious British food can be when done correctly. Also for my beer lovers, this pub specialises in craft beers and frequently rotates and features new guest beers throughout the year.  My favourite thing to get when I come to The Broadfield is a pie. Overall, I would say I am generally not a huge pie lover, I don’t dislike them but unless they are made by my mother I could take them or leave them. However it is my own personal ritual that I absolutely have to have a pie when I come here (except for at Christmas) Usually I opt for some

G Spot by Gillian Anderson Review

When I first heard that Gillian Anderson was going to be releasing a drinks brand called G Spot I was immediately excited. Being a big fan of Gillian and her work, I was intrigued to see what direction she would take when creating a brand of her own. The result was G Spot, a brand dedicated to pleasure and taste. Their website states ‘For way too long, the wellness industry has been missing that fulfilling sweet spot where true sensorial satisfaction meets tangible benefit,’ with the brand boasting, ‘Functional drinks that delight the taste buds and ignite the senses.’ Each drink is boosted with ‘Adaptogens’ and ‘Nootropics’ supposed to provide certain health benefits whilst also tasting good.

I have been eager to try these drinks ever since they were released just over a year ago. A 6 pack of each flavour goes for £16.50 and a 12 pack for £29.95 through the G Spot website but can also be bought through alternative retailers such as Harvey Nichols and Fortnum and Mason. It is safe to say that these drinks are on the more luxurious and expensive side of the market and so I decided to take a trip to the nearest Harvey Nichols to me in order to test the flavours available before committing to buying any large packs.

Now, after having tried each of the flavours G Spot currently has on offer, I have compiled my thoughts into a little review below. And in order to stretch my photography muscles again, I also have created a little photoshoot with each flavour and put that incredibly sleek and aesthetic packaging to good use.

Soothe - Scarlet Apple and Sage

Fresh apples, sage, and a light infusion of angelica paired with the ultimate friends with benefits. Calm the mind and your mood – a more zen state starts with every sip. - G Spot Drinks

The first flavour I tried from the selection was Soothe, an apple and sage flavoured drink. The liquid was a pale greenish colour very similar to the colour of a white wine. My first impressions of the drink itself is that it is very sage forward with the apple flavour hitting the taste buds afterwards. I myself am a fan of sage, so I found it to have a very pleasant and unique flavour. The apple in the drink provides a very crisp finish and natural sweetness that is not too full on like other soft drinks such as Coca Cola. I think this drink is more akin to an Appletiser with an added layer of sophistication from the sage and angelica. This drink is boosted with Magnesium, Reishi, Zinc and Theanine all with the intention to relax, reduce anxiety and stress and improve sleep. I certainly did feel relaxed whilst enjoying this beverage and very sleepy, although I think that was mostly to do with the long day of shopping I had had and less to do with the drink itself. Overall, I am a big fan of this flavour and feel it is one of the most unique of the line.

Lift - Red Berries and Sarawak

Morning, afternoon, or whenever your energy hits a low point, power up! Red berries and Sarawak are on hand to uplift your spirit, sip by sip – making sure you feel unapologetically you. - G Spot Drinks

The next drink I tried was Lift, a burnt orange coloured drink of red berries and sarawak peppercorns. I found the flavour of this drink to be very nostalgic and reminiscent of some mystery drink I have had in the past. Whilst I couldn't taste a lot of the pepper, it does add a slightly more grown up edge to the sweetness of the berries and additionally leaves behind a pleasant warmth. I think that Lift was my favourite flavour of them all and I would happily purchase a pack of them again.

Arouse - Passionfruit and Habanero

Get in the mood with zesty passionfruit, sweet pineapple and spicy orange habanero. Seduce yourself with every sip whenever you feel the need… - G Spot Drinks

Next is Arouse, a drink made in collaboration with Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’ in which Gillian Anderson herself plays quirky sex therapist Jean Milburn. This drink was released to coincide with the final season of the show, of which I am a big fan. Arouse is a passionfruit and habanero flavoured soft drink with a lovely bluish purple colour derived from the inclusion of butterfly pea. A light fruity smell is followed by a sweet, intense passion fruit hit and a warming sensation from the habanero. I was touch wary before trying this as I thought that perhaps the habanero would mean that the drink would pack a spicy punch, however it just provides a very slight warmth similar to the peppercorn in Lift and the ginger in Protect. Another unique and tasty flavour from G Spot.

Protect - Ginger and Peppercorn

Protect is a warming and zesty mix of lemon, ginger, turmeric, and meadowsweet creating a comforting yet refreshing and invigorating taste profile. The subtle hint of peppercorn and the addition of chaga add to its unique flavour, making this drink a truly distinctive experience - G Spot Drinks

Last on the list is Protect, a warm honey coloured beverage with the flavour of Ginger and Peppercorn. I found this to be an enjoyable drink but my least favourite of the range. Protect was a very refreshing and fruity drink very similar to other ginger beers I have tried. For those that enjoy ginger beer, this drink may be for you. Even though I liked drinking it, I found it to be the least interesting when compared to the other amazing flavours the brand has to offer.

According to the G Spot website, adaptogens are ‘active ingredients in certain plants that aim to return your body to a state of balance by increasing or decreasing chemical reactions within the body, impacting how your body adapts to stress, anxiety and fatigue,’ and Nootropics are ‘Nootropics are substances that are reported to boost cognitive function and brain performance. Nootropics purport to improve mental function, including thinking, memory, mood, attention, creativity, and motivation.’ Personally, I didn’t notice much of a difference in my mood or attention whilst drinking G Spot, whether this is because I need to drink them more often or I just found them to be a tasty beverage, I would not be able to confirm after only trying them once.

Overall, I think G Spot has created some really great products. I would definitely purchase Soothe, Lift and Arouse again as a treat when I feel like drinking something a bit special but the price point does prohibit me from making these a regular occurrence in my drinking repertoire.. I also really appreciate the marketing and extra merchandise that is also available for purchase from the G Spot website. From seriously cute totes to beanies, Gillian Anderson has created a very interesting and fun business in G Spot.

  1. Out of the four flavours the passionfruit and habanero, was certainly my own stand out flavour. I also think it would excel if paired with the right gin.
